From July 7, 2008 the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is being extended to include vehicles over 3.5 tonnes as well as buses and coaches. Those vehicles which to not meet the required emission standards will have to pay a daily charge of £200 or risk a £1000 fine.

Vehicles which do not meet the LEZ standard can fit approved particulate abatement equipment and then certify that the standards have been met.

The European Commission is asking for the views of small business on which aspects of VAT legislation could be removed - comments can be sent electronically.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has criticised new legislation on employing foreign workers that will impose unrealistic expectations and draconian fines on employers.

Parts of the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act, which came into force on February 29, 2008, requires small employers to understand and verify up to thirteen different forms of identification when employing foreign workers, including recognising the passports of 27 EU member states.
